I’ve had a hard year. It’s no big secret. I have needed my girlfriends like never before and I have repeatedly told you all about the wonderful women in my life here in Denver. Time spent with them is healing, fun, relaxing, adventurous, and I could fill this whole post with adjectives to describe it, so I’ll stop.
Last Friday night, my Captivating friends (Wendy, Paula, Abi, and Kristi) and I, along with Kristi’s hubby Calvin, and our friend Nancy, dressed up and went to the theater for the evening. It’s been 16 years since I first saw the play, but Les Mis was incredible! In an email to Paula the next day, I wrote:
“Last night was amazing and I’m still processing it. My heart was happy being with my friends I love so much. As for Les Mis, I saw some things in it this time that only a step up in maturity allowed me to see. I’ve known the story and sang the songs since I was 16. Seeing it at 20 was really amazing and beautiful, but at 36, my experiences were VERY different. Because of the emotion I’ve been dealing with over the last two weeks, I couldn’t fully let myself go last night and I stuffed A LOT of emotions that this show normally calls forth. I couldn’t let the tears come like they wanted to. My heart felt like it would burst through my chest, but the tears remained inside like I had swallowed them and their journey was just too far. It was a surreal experience for me, who doesn’t like to hold anything back and wants to be real ALL the time, pretty or not. It was good. I am grateful for the experience. I’m a little overwhelmed. I remain in love with this story. I’m feeling a little, “On my own” myself. So much beauty and so much pain. What a mixture. “God on high, hear my prayer…” mmmmmm Goosebumps. Glad I was sitting next to you. 🙂 ”
While I thoroughly enjoyed last Friday, tonight will be a very different story. I’ll be laughing…hard. I’m going to see Girls Only: The Secret Comedy of Women at the Denver Performing Arts Center. (Click on the title to watch the youtube video clip of the show.) I will be meeting Wendy, Kristi and her sister, and Karen, to enjoy a girls night out. Here’s what the website says:
GIRLS ONLY is an original comedy that celebrates the honor, truth, humor and silliness of being female. With a two-woman cast and audiences full of raucous, laughing ladies, the show has found quick popularity in its unique examination of all things girly.
Borne out of the earnest and sweetly ridiculous writings the two authors discovered in their girlhood diaries, the GIRLS ONLY mix of sketch comedy, improvisation, audience participation, and hilarious songs and videos will remind you that underneath, women all have very funny and very charming feminine similarities.
We encourage women to come and bring their mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends. We promise you’ll leave laughing, ready to dig out your old diary.
Next Friday night’s drama and silliness is a story for my next post! Stay tuned…
My follow up for anyone who reads this: I laughed so hard I almost wet my pants, I had trouble breathing, and I narrowly missed having a coughing ft. Wendy, Kristi, Karen and I sat at a Starbucks afterward still laughing at what we had heard. It was HILARIOUS! If you live in the Denver area, grabs some girlfriends and go see this play! It’s running through Dec.
What a great way to spend a Friday night!

Doing a little catch-up on your blog and saw the Les Mis reference. It’s the first book on my list that I’ll be sending your way shortly and I love the play just as much. I’ve seen the traveling Broadway show three times, which was great, but I got to see it in London in 2006 which was incredible because it had the best cast of females among any of the shows I’d seen — and because of that, the story was that much richer and more beautiful…something I wasn’t expecting. If I haven’t already, remind me to tell you the story of the bet I made with Chad about the play when we were in London…good catching up with you. 🙂
