It’s been a few days since I posted Part 1, so I thought I’d have time to think of other hobbies I enjoy. You already know that reading is at the top of my list. Browsing book stores and libraries would be a close 2nd. I love thrift store shopping and going to the movies by myself, but I don’t think of them as hobbies.
That’s it. I couldn’t think of anything else.
Does that make me mostly hobby-less?
Wikipedia says, “Hobbies are practiced for interest and enjoyment, rather than financial reward. Examples include collecting, creative and artistic pursuits, making, tinkering, sports and adult education. Engaging in a hobby can lead to acquiring substantial skill, knowledge and experience. However, personal fulfillment is the aim.”
I’m not a collector of anything anymore. I do enjoy a creative artistic project now and then, but I’m not consistent. I can’t think of anything I enjoy making. I’m not a tinker. I haven’t played sports since college. I do like learning new things. I wonder if I’m just in a busy season of life and for right now, I don’t have time for hobbies? (Other than reading, of course.) Or maybe it’s so easy to be a hobby chameleon because I don’t want to find a hobby of my own? I’m not sure. I just know that I don’t get excited about any one thing like a lot of the people in my life do. (Other than reading, of course.)
Maybe that’s enough. Maybe I’m putting way too much thought into this subject.
What are your hobbies?
Maybe I’ll join you…;)
I’m with you there. I quit collecting stuff because it soon over filled my house. I just don’t have time or energy for hobbies due to the fact that I have to earn a living. I will probably keep my reading addiction though. I also wouldn’t mind a really nice camera. I’ve always wanted to be a good photographer.

Just face it. Reading is your hobby. You are intensely in love with it. It captures your free time. You are skilled at it. (and knowledgeable and experienced!!) It relaxes you, refreshes you, rejuvenates you.
It is perfectly legitimate.
Don’t fight it. Embrace it.
I’m right there with ya sister.

Hobby chameleon…. good term. π
What’s wrong with just having one big hobby like reading? Sounds better than having a million little ones.

I have a lot of interests, but I don’t know that I would call all of them hobbies. During the winter months I quilt and bake. During the summer months I fish and canoe. In the spring and fall I like to get outside and take pictures. I walk year around. I like to write, read and play chess year around too. I also quit collecting stuff.

I think my hobby is being with my kids and really being present with them. Also a new hobby is purging all the extra stuff out of the house that is taking up time, energy, and mental space… With kids, this stuff adds up. So maybe my hobby is organizing… I like to take walks around the block as the kids ride there bikes. I love to be outside. And I also love getting lost in a book.

Thanks for your validation of my ONE hobby! π And yes, I give Don full credit for coming up with the “Hobby Chameleon” phrase. He called me that first and it stuck. π
Julie! I didn’t think of de-cluttering as a hobby, but it could be. It sort of fits in with my next post too.
