One of our Pastors, Michael, sends out emails to our church family every week. They always make me grateful to be a part of such a community of believers. I haven’t seen Michael in a few weeks, but I can hear his voice in today’s email. I can feel the passion for God and His children. I can see his eyes looking right at me as if his message is only for me and God has something for me to think about today. Today’s message hit me unexpectedly and I am so thankful for the many ways God speaks to me, and humbled THAT he speaks to me. I also know that it is my gift and calling to pass along what God tells me to. So here is your challenge for today. Think away my friends!
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
-Jesus (Mark 8:29)
Jesus asked his closest friends this. I always wonder what I would answer if Christ asked me who I think he is. I would start pointing to what others have said about him. I think he would stop me and say “no, I’m asking YOU!”. So I would say that I have a lot of friends who believe in him. “No, YOU!” Well, I have a lot of evidence that suggest you were around. I have a community that worships you together. I have a Bible I read. I have songs I sing. I have childhood memories of church. I have all of this.
But again, if he asked me who I think he really is, I would have to respond with personal words that have to do with this relationship we have shared. I would respond with this: “Jesus, I believe you are my encourager, my peace, my joy, my friend, my teacher, gentle guider, my emotional center. You have been there when I needed you most. You helped me learn to love and be loved by people. You have given me security and faith. But you are more. I believe you are my Lord. I believe you are God.”.
Who do you say Jesus is? Not proofs or stories you have heard. Who do YOU say he is?
He’s my Savior, friend, hope, big brother, cheerleader, teacher–and He is God.
